City of God - a slum in the city of Rio de Janeiro - bears a name that ironically reflects the hope for goodness and beauty to reach its inhabitants. However, the harsh reality paints a brutal and unforgiving picture. Children are surrounded by gunshots more than they are by books. Young adults turn to theft and robbery as a means of survival. Surprisingly, the community doesn't despise these petty criminals; in fact, they often shield and protect them, viewing the local police force as the true enemy. These corrupt officers shamelessly collaborate with the underworld bosses, ruthlessly gunning down anyone they deem suspicious. When the very enforcers of the law turn a blind eye to such crimes, who can the people rely on? The cycle of crime and poverty continues to grip this city, refusing to let go.
